A Guy, A Girl selling Mary Kay
My Wife and I (at the time of this project) are both college students. We both were always looking for ways to make some extra spending money to help us along. One day one of my wife’s friends invited her to go to a makeup party (here I am thinking, “oh no”). When she got home a few hours later she had a plan. She was going to sell enough Mary Kay makeup to earn the Infamous MaryKay car.
But she wanted to give it a go. So, I decided to try to help her, this started out not as an EDGE project but something that my wife wanted to try out. So, she was in charge of the selling and ordering it was my job to tell her what she had in stock and keep track of her business. After a week of trying to get everthing running I had an idea why not get more than just “money”. I had to use this as my EDGE project.
The inspiration for this project was a super simple process. My wife and I were sitting at the dinner table talking, and she was saying thank you for the work I was putting in for her. I was sitting there thinking to myself I wish I could make this more useful for me, then it hit me EDGE! I can make this work.
There were really no challenges that we faced in the business, other than trying to make money to try to pay for school. That was the whole goal from the get go. We pretty much paid for the reminder of my wife’s tuition with what we made from MaryKay.
The other person that benefited was most defiantly my wife. She got an opportunity to meet new people and she also got to have a bunch of makeup to try on…. Pretty much every girls dream.
This project benefited me in so many ways. First, it helped me with an EDGE project. Second it helped me learn how to manage an inventory. Third it allowed me to figure out what not to do when running a business with my wife. Then the most important thing was it gave me the opportunity to spend more time with my wife!
Life is truly a reflection of what we allow ourselves to be and see.
